In summer 2008 Norfolk Marine were commissioned to refurbish ESB’S Cliff Generating stations downstream gates which had not sealed in 25 years in preparation for a major station refit. The contract involved the survey of the gates in situ to allow new seals to be designed then the removal of the 7 gates each weighing between 9 and 10 tons.
Three of the gates were placed into storage; the remaining 4 were transported off site for refurbishment. The steel gates were grit blasted and hot zinc galvanized by a specialist subcontractor before the new top, bottom and side seals were fitted. Reinstatement of the gates included dewatering trials to ensure the seals performed.
